电影主要讲述年关将至，吴刚饰演的编剧王自亮，时刻充满着中年危机的焦虑，因妻儿都在国外，他只身背负着巨大重压，周旋在事业、家庭、人际关系等多重问题中。而在电影中扮演王自亮母亲的演员，则是我们人见人爱的老艺术家吴彦姝女士。演员吴彦姝自带南方老太太的精致与优雅，由她扮演的王妈妈也是典型徽州人家老太太，在北方生活感觉不太自在，最大的愿望是和四个儿女一起开开心心吃顿年夜饭，然而，四个儿女各有各的生活难题……一家人的关系也变得微妙起来，三代人的矛盾顿时涌出。
