刑天闻阪泉之败，炎帝归服轩辕，心不甘，谓左右曰：“神农氏，我一主也。神农厚德，必不意争雄而扰民，故遭此败。我既受神农托任，岂甘束手就擒？吾不愿为黄帝部，欲挑战之。吾素闻黄帝天命所归，吾不信，今改称曰刑天，意罚天命也。”

于是刑天执干戚，携方盾，踏山河而至皇廷，挑战黄帝。

黄帝闻刑天至，挥干戚衅，怒，乃提剑应战。黄帝既出，见刑天，以剑指之，曰：“汝何为？”

刑天曰：“吾知炎帝爱民，无意战事，才使汝胜。吾不服，欲与汝战。”

黄帝乃与刑天战。刑天举干戚劈之，黄帝避，干戚裂地而成函谷。刑天顿地成塬，斩地开谷。黄帝举刑天而掷之。刑天落，其躯推土移河，土积为阴山。中原有石曰岱，刑天力拔岱石而投，石落兖州，后称为泰。

黄帝战刑天，战之四海内，刑天终力竭，黄帝挥剑斩刑天，其首落常羊山。

刑天首既没，失目，无以见物，舞干戚欲加刃于帝，未得，心曰：“天令人有双目于首，我名刑天，何必听天？我躯尚在，有二乳一脐，可为我用。”乃化乳头为眼，脐为口，更战之。战之不尽，黄帝无奈何，后世奉为战神。
