《大鱼》这部电影以现实和讲故事穿插的手法展开，讲诉父子的情感纠葛。离奇的故事出自父亲爱德华之口，在年幼的儿子威尔的心目中父亲的形象如此高大。可当威尔长大，发现父亲的故事光怪陆离，他觉得父亲是虚假的，自己根本不了解父亲。随着情节的发展，才发现父亲比自己认为的，要真实的多、可爱的多，然而病魔缠身的父亲，还是在安详中死去，可已获得儿子的理解。
